#FreeGameFridays – The NFL presents the Super Bowl XI full game between the Oakland Raiders and the Minnesota Vikings. January 9, 1977.

19:50 Vikings Block Punt

21:23 Vikings fumble, Raiders recover at the goal line

24:10 C. Davis 35-yard Run

41:51 Stabler 1-yard TD Pass to Casper

49:00 P. Banaszak 1-yard TD Run

1:30:38 F. Tarkenton 8-yard TD Pass to S. White

1:41:25 Willie Hall Picks Off Tarkenton

1:43:09 Biletnikoff 48-yard catch from Stabler

1:49:35 Willie Brown 75-yard pick six off Tarkenton

1:55:06 Raiders Stop Vikings on 4th Down

2:05:40 Lee 13-yard TD Pass to Voigt

The Minnesota Vikings of the ’70s were commonly known as the Purple People Eaters for their suffocating defense that swallowed run games whole. Their trip to the Super Bowl was supposed to be the icing on the cake, but the Raiders had other ideas searing the vaunted Vikes’ defense with a balance of running an passing with both quarterback Ken Stabler and running back Clarence Davis having excellent games. The Raiders set a then Super Bowl record 429 offensive yards on their way to a dominant 32-14 victory.

2:01:34 I remember my parents were taking a nap, and I went into their bedroom and said that the Raiders were holding a sign that said, "We're No 1." They informed me that it meant, "We're number 1." that was my Super Bowl XI memory, along the Time Magazine cover that had a cartoon depiction of a Raider and a Viking at the like of scrimmage. I was 7.

"Biggest man in the NFL at 275." He would be the smallest lineman in the NFL today. Crazy how much bigger the player are today.

Professionals. Each one of them. Not a single pose or warrior scream after making a play. No whining, just playing ball. I miss this NFL.

Tatum would be suspended for the hit on Sammy White if he played today. He wasn’t even penalized.

Is it me or are these guys actually using the art of tackling? Also I noticed that Tarkenton got thrown to the ground well after he passed the ball, yet didn't whine about it like they would these days.

I'm 50 years old now. My whole life I have been hurt by my Vikings looking at things like the kid I was. But watching this game and others now as a adult I'm more disappointed than hurt. They looked like they didn't belong on the same field as the Raiders or the Chiefs, Steelers or Dolphins. Fran was my man but he did not show up in the big game. For all that is said about our Purple People Eating defense truth is they were weaker than other elite NFL defenses. And Bud got out coached by 4 hall of fame coaches. Sucks to grow up and realize that your childhood fantasy wasn't what you thought it was.

As a Raiders fan I love how the raiders dominated the game butni do feel bad for those Vikings teams to get to so many super bowls and lose all of them has to be rough

It is inconceivable to me that Cliff Branch is not in the Hall of Fame. And now that he has passed away, it is more like a crime. The sportswriters are doing to Branch what they already did to Bob Hayes of the Dallas Cowboys. Hayes eventually was enshrined in Canton but many years after he died.
Will they now do the same to Dallas’ Drew Pearson?

Looks like Rashad should have also been flagged at 46:12 shown in replay.

Loved when there was more balance between the passing game, and running game. Today's game is much more passing. Which leads to more pass interference calls. Wouldn't wanna be a safety, or defensive back in today's game. They look at the receiver , and get a flag called on them !

I was 10..and YES.. the Vikings were my team, Fran Tarkenton impressed me so much – I was hooked..
Shockingly and amazing enough my mom wins two tickets to the Superbowl all-expenses-paid.
So.. my former stepfather and her went to Pasadena. I ended up getting a program and Viking pennant..
The Vikings lost again.. I jump ship to the Broncos in 1977 and haven't looked back since…

Despite Stabler winning their first Super Bowl in the franchise's history, (Stabler's tenth year in the league) he would be traded to the Oilers., The old re-tread Jim Plunkett would lead the Raider's in the '80 season, to the franchise's second Super Bowl win in January '81, their second in second in a five year span. Finally, again Plunkett, after relieving Marc Wilson during the regular season of '83, would lead the Raiders to the franchise's third Super Bowl win in January '84, making the Raiders Super Bowl champions for the third time in in a span of only eight seasons, and the franchise's first in their new home of LA.
